Today I want to introduce my favorite improvised piece, which was recorded at Codarts in the Netherlands, 2018.
When my great teacher Josué Amador (@j.w.amador) sent introduction mail first about his class named ‘Improvisation’ to the students who study composition at Codarts, I just believed that it must be about Jazz because I was involved to Jazz department and had no idea else, just couldn’t imagine that there could be the other world which I don’t know. But I was shocked when I went to his class first, because he was scratching his guitar with the backside of a teaspoon.
Add to that, I found that there were so many people who were really into making electronic music with their DAW, but not pop music. Well, I am from Korea and probably as most of you all know, nowadays K-pop is one of the most important topics in the major industry of my country.
So I was confused, really confused. I always had to think like ‘what is the definition of music?’ ‘Until which point can we accept this noise as music?’ I remember that it took quite a long time till I opened my eyes and changed my mind.
Now I don’t feel “odd” or “weird” anymore about this kind of experimental music. Rather, I listen carefully and observe the performers thinking like ‘What do you want to express now with this sound/movement?’

This piece “DUO” (track 8) from the album was recorded by me (Piano) and Josué (Guitar). I still love this piece because I remember that I was crying during the recording session. It was the toughest season of my life, and I put all my emotion and energy on it when I played.
Hope you like it. I just wanted to let you know that there are millions of other kinds of music besides pop music on this planet.
오늘이네요, 스스로 미친짓이라고 생각하며 3일전부터 기획한 워크샵. ㅎㅎ
오늘은 제가 네덜란드에서 참여했던 즉흥연주 앨범을 소개하며 마지막 홍보를 해볼까 합니다. 석사 초기 즉흥연주 수업을 들을 학생을 모집하시는 교수님의 메일을 읽고는 처음엔 당연히 Jazz Improvisation 에 관한 수업인줄 알고 (그도 그럴것이 즉흥연주라고 하면 재즈밖에 몰랐으니까요..) 아무 생각없이 갔다가 매우 당황했던 그날의 기억이 아직도 제게 선명합니다. ㅋㅋㅋ
첫날… 선생님이 숟가락 뒷면으로 기타줄을 긁고 계시더라구요. ㅎㅎㅎ
그 외에도 미디로 만들어지는 Pop 음악, 그리고 EDM 외에 순수한 의미에서의 전자음악이라는 게 존재한다는 걸 알고 무척 놀랐어요. 정말 혼란스러웠죠. 음악의 정의가 무엇인지, 어디까지를 음악이라고 할 수 있는 건지 1년 가량 무척 고민했던 제 자신이 기억납니다.
3년간 즉흥연주 수업에 매학기 참여하며 저는 점점 눈을 떴고, 기괴하게만 느껴지던 그 소리들이 어느 순간 익숙하게 느껴지기 시작했습니다. 여전히 모든 음악에 귀가 열렸다고 할 순 없지만, (이상한 건 진짜 이상하거든요 ㅋ)
최소한 그냥 “헐- 듣기싫어, 이게 뭐야 안 들을래” 하던 옛날의 태도는 사라졌죠. (고백하자면, 저 유학 이전엔 현대음악 끔찍하게 싫어했답니다. ㅍㅎㅎ)
그에 비해 지금은, 지금 저 사람이 대체 뭘 표현하고 싶은걸까, 왜 저런 액션을 취하는걸까, 지금 이 순간 저 사람은 대체 어떤 감정이며 어떤 컨셉으로 연주/행위하는 걸까,, 등을 궁금해하며 진지하게 바라보게 되었어요. 아마도 저는 그 곳에서 #호기심 과 #존중 을 배웠나봐요.

지금 영상에서 들으시는 음악은 링크 속 앨범의 8번째곡, DUO 입니다.
즉흥연주수업 선생님 (Josué Amador) 그리고 저의 듀엣 라이브 녹음인데요, 수업 관련하여 참여했던 앨범 3개 중에 제게는 이 곡이 ‘베스트’ 라고 각인되어 있어요. 그도 그럴 것이.. 이 곡 녹음하던 순간 저, 연주하면서 흐느끼고 있었거든요. 당시 마음이 정말 힘들 때였는데, 그걸 다 쏟아부으며 표현하느라 그랬던 것 같습니다.
링크와 관련된 다른 앨범들을 들어보시면 아시겠지만, ‘즉흥연주’ 는 이렇듯 다양한 형태로 존재합니다. 오늘 워크샵에 몇분이 얼마나 오시든, 귀국 후 무의식적으로 느껴왔던 순수예술에 관한 갈증을 풀어나가는 첫걸음이 될 것이기에 제게도 의미있는 시간이 될 것이라 예상합니다. 아마도 저는 음악의 넓은 바다를 “explore” 하는 중인 것 같아요 !
