Introduction I. Serene & Sarang

Serene & Sarang is a Korean music duo performing Korean traditional music reinvented in their own musical language. Their original songs belong to no current musical genre which is why they refer to themselves as “the strangers”.
Serene Kim is an expert of a specific old era Korean noble music known as ‘Jung-ga’. It is still relatively unknown to many Koreans as it was only sung between those in the high class of old Korean society. As an official Korean Intangible Cultural Asset (properties) 12 Gasa Completer, her passion for traditional music is innate yet she does not wish to limit her musical boundaries. Through Serene’s life as an Intangible Cultural Asset and by studying and practicing alternate perspectives of Korean music, she desires to express the authentic beauty of Korea through her unique voice.
Composer, pianist and arranger, Sarang H. Lee always thought of herself as a “later bloomer”. She discovered and became curious about an unknown and distant world and traveled to The Netherlands to pursue a masters degree in jazz composition at Codarts Rotterdam at the age of 36. Life and study in an unfamiliar land with a foreign language was never easy but the adversity opened her eyes and changed what she valued in life. She has since been broadening her musical spectrum working as a jazz composer, lyricist, arranger, producer, improviser and lecturer. Sarang is a strong advocate of her Korean heritage and its traditional music as she strives to introduce this beautiful music to the world.
Serene & Sarang met in Holland in early 2017 and collaborated together during their time away from home. Having traveled back to Korea after their studies, after all these years, they have finally reunited in Seoul. Celebrating their first visit to The Netherlands as artists after COVID-19, the duo begin their journey to showcase their new and original reinterpreted Korean ethnic music on the world stage and will release their debut album on the 9th of Feb, 2023.

서린사랑’ 은
한국 중요무형문화재 제 41호 12가사 이수자 ‘서린’과
재즈, 팝, 현대음악 작곡가인 ‘사랑’ 의
한국음악 듀오를 일컫는 이름이다.
2017년 초, 이들은 각자 가족의 상황 및 학위과정을 위해 일시 거류주이던 네덜란드에서 지인의 소개로 만나게 되었다. 서로에게서 한국의 전통음악에 대한 애정을 반갑게 확인한 이들은 이후로 꾸준히 정기적인 만남을 갖기 시작했는데, 만남이 지속되는 동안 현시대에 연주, 발표되는 한국 음악에 대한 생각들과 소소한 일상을 나누며 우정을 쌓기 시작했고 얼마 지나지 않아 각자 음악가로서 상대방이 쌓아온 음악세계와 재능, 가치관 등에 깊이 매료되었다.
그렇게 두 아티스트의 서로를 향한 동경은 그들로 하여금 자연스럽게 ‘함께 부르고 싶은 노래’ 들을 고르고 다듬는 과정을 시작하게 이끌었다. 이를 계기로 네덜란드에서 몇 번의 작은 무대를 경험하였으나 결국 그들에게는 각자 돌아갈 집이 있었고, 그렇게 타국생활을 마무리하며 약 1년여의 시간 차이를 두고 귀국, 이후 코로나 바이러스가 전세계에 창궐하던 즈음 서울에서 다시 만나 본격적인 음악작업에 돌입하게 된다.
이들의 조합은 우리의 전통음악에 대한 무한한 자부심에서 시작되었다는 점에 있어 여느 팀과 다를 바가 없으나, 어쩌면 그들이 사용하는 언어와 방식은 혹 한국인들에게조차 낯설게 느껴질지도 모르겠다. 이는 아마도 한국의 전통음악이 (우리에게 익숙하다는 이유만으로) 기존의 고유한 빛깔에 대한 깊은 사유 없이 다루어지는 것을 매우 경계해야 한다는 점에 통감했던 두 사람의 공통된 생각이 빚어낸 그들만의 색깔 때문이 아닐런지..
그런 까닭에 ‘서린사랑’ 은 스스로 자신들의 조합을 ‘Strangers’ (이방인과 같은 존재) 라고 느끼고 있으며, 어쩌면 자신들의 음악은 한국의 전통음악 종사자들에게 장르를 특정할 수 없는 것으로 여겨질 지도 모르겠다고 말한다. 현 시대 국악씬의 주류 및 트렌드와 비교힐 때 그 결이 사뭇 다르기 때문이다.
그럼에도 불구하고 확실한 것은, 이들이 예로부터 전해 내려 온 우리 민족의 노래들 – 민요와 정가 – 에 매우 조심스럽게 접근하고 있다는 사실이다.
더불어 이들은 한국 전통음악에 관한 스스로의 자부심을 적극 반영하여 우리의 아름다운 노래들을 좀 더 널리 소개하고자 잘 알려진 노래들을 영어로 번안하는 작업을 하고 있다. 듀오로서의 데뷔 앨범 ‘The Strangers’ Strange Songs’ 에 수록된 ‘아리랑’과 ‘Bird, O Blue Bird (새야새야)’가 그 한 예이다.
이는 ‘그동안 아리랑을 많이 들어봤는데 그 노래의 가사는 무슨 뜻이냐’ 고 물어온 한 외국인 친구에게 가사 뜻을 직역 해 주려다, 순간 멈칫하며 ‘아리랑이 그저 단순히 날 떠나간 님에게 발병이나 나라고 저주하는 내용은 아닐텐데’ 했던 날의 기억이 불러일으킨 또다른 열정이라 하겠다.
오롯이 서양 음악적인 배경과 환경에서 자랐으나 오랜시간 마음 한켠에 한국전통음악을 동경해 온 ‘사랑’과, 전통음악 전공자라는 틀에 스스로를 가두지 않고 경계 없이 이 세상의 모든 아름다운 노래들을 부르고 싶은 ‘서린’의 만남.
여러분께 이 둘의 행보에 대한 기대와 관심을 요청한다.
그들의 음악은 (다소 ‘Strange” 하게 들릴지언정) 분명 ‘나의 나라’를 깊이 사랑하는 아티스트 두 사람이 한국인으로서의 정체성을 자신들만의 색깔로 표현해 내기 위해 오랜 시간 고민하여 빚어낸 값진 열매인 까닭이다.
