Last week, all the staff of the Applied Music department of Doowon Technical University and the students had 3 guests from the Netherlands who wanted to visit and see the Korean conservatories.
Mila, Alfiye, and Isa, they are 3rd year students of Hogeschool Leiden (University of Applied Sciences Leiden) and have been majoring in Music Education. They said that they planned a trip to Korea and thought that it might be nice if they could look around some Korean conservatories and how the Korean music education system is set, and then started searching where to visit.
But because in Korea it’s not common for schools to open themselves to the public, it was not easy for them to find the proper one.
One day, they met a Korean bandoneonist, Anna Choi, and were recommended to contact me (Sarang H. Lee, the pop and jazz music composer based in Korea) who works as a lecturer in the applied music department in DTU. And then finally, they found a very suitable one to visit and take a field trip! 🙂
Though it’s not common to have visitors from abroad in school in Korea, I knew that my boss (Mr.Lim, one of the most famous singers in Korea) has an open mind and will allow their visit, and he did so. So we could make it on time thanks to his generosity. 🙂
After Mr. Lim’s agreement, the head of the music education department in the UAS Leiden sent an official consent letter, and all things for their visit started being scheduled.
On the day of the spot study, they stayed at DTU for around 6 hours in total. During their observation, they joined in 3 classes and experienced the recording session at firsthand with the 2nd and 3rd year students. The students welcomed them very warmly and sweetly, and the visitors were so glad for it. (They mentioned their warm-hearted attitude several times on the way back to Seoul.)
It won’t be easy to observe and know how music is shaped in Korea by visiting for a short time, of course, but I think it was somehow a good opportunity for both sides to open their eyes, widen their perspective toward music & this planet.
Thank you all, the students from Leiden and DTU, and the professors, lectures, and assisting staff. With your help and cooperation, we all have taken a step forward. 🙂
지난 주 두원공대 실용음악학과엔
특별한 손님의 방문이 있었습니다.
바로 네덜란드의 레이든에 있는 음대에서
음악교육을 전공하는 세 명의 학생이
한국의 음악 교육 시스템을 알고자
견학을 온 것이었는데요,
비록 단 하루동안의 방문이었지만
아침부터 꽤 긴 시간동안
여러번의 수업 참관과 레코딩 체험등을 통해
나름 알차게 준비된 일정을 학생들과 함께 하며
다같이 즐거워했던, 재미난 시간이었답니다.
어떻게 이어진 인연인지
많이 궁금하실 듯 하여 짧게 설명을 드리면,
같은 과 친구들끼리 한국여행을 계획하던 차에
자신들의 전공과 관련된 음악교육에 대해
한국의 학교를 탐방하는 시간을 가져보면 어떨까,
라는 생각이 들었다고 해요.
(이 부분이 너무 놀라웠어요 @.@)
다만 이 학생들이
미처 예측하지 못한 부분이 있었다면
한국에서는 학교 개방이 보편적이지 않다는 점인데요,
네덜란드는 일반적으로
해당 학교에 관심있는 미래의 입학생들을 위해
정기적으로 학교를 개방하는 날이 있기 때문에
막연히 한국도 그럴 것이라고 생각했던 듯 합니다.
하지만 아시다시피 한국은 그렇지 않지요.
그런 까닭에 알음알음 여러 학교에 문의하며
학교 오픈가능 여부를 타진하는 과정이
쉽지만은 않았고, 기운도 빠졌다는데,
마침 네덜란드에서 활동중이신
반도네오니스트 최안나 님 @anneneon 의 추천으로
제가 (작곡가 사랑) 강사로 재직중인

조심스레 학교방문 가능여부 문의가 전달됐을 때
흔쾌히 허락하신

이 일은 일사천리로 진행되기 시작했어요.
레이든 학교 측에서는
견학생 추천 및 방문요청 공문이 정식 발송되었고,
두원공대 측에서는 일정 조율 및
실용음악과 교수님들께 수업참관 협조요청 등
실제로 견학이 성사되기까지
잠깐의 부산스러운 시간이 있었고요.

학생들과의 서로를 향한 질의응답 및 수다가
끊이지를 않아서

파주역에서 지하철을 타고
숙소로 돌아가는 길엔
실용음악과 학생들이 너무 다정하고 친절해서
좀 더 있고 싶다고, 돌아가기 싫다고
몇번이나 반복해서 말하던 이 친구들이 기억나네요.
단순히 한국의 음악교육이 궁금했던 것일 뿐인데
학과 측에서 이런저런 것들을 직접 보고 들을수 있도록
배려해주신 부분에 대해서도
감사표현이 상당히 많았고요,
실제로 녹음까지 경험해보게 될 줄은 몰랐다고..^^
하루동안 보고 들은 모든것이
다 너무 좋았다고 했어요.
그 말을 들으니 긴장이 확 풀리더라고요.ㅎ
마침 학교의 장비와 연습실 등
여러 시설이 훌륭한 편이라
체험하기에도 참 좋았고,
학과장님을 위시하여
교수님들도 정말 따뜻하게 맞아주셨어요.
모두모두 감사합니다.
학생들도 고마워요.
짧은 시간이었지만, 양쪽 모두에
성장의 기회가 되었을 거라고 생각합니다.:)
앞으로도 이런 일이 종종 있었으면 좋겠습니다.
제게는 네덜란드도, 두원 실음과도 참 소중하니까요♡
